I want you to think big, dream big and act big!!!!  Today is the day you start.  Were not putting off until a new day, week, month or year start.  I need you to think about what you are trying to achieve and whats your dreams and goals and go for it.  Once you figure that out its time to plan your course of action. After you have your plan is time to , “ACT BIG”. Its time to roll up those sleeves and get to work.  Is going to be some sleepless nights, tired days but its worth it at the end.  I like to write quick short blogs. The post are quick and to the point. I rather you spend the time reading or doing something that will get you closer to your dream. I just want to help jump start your motivation.

Discounts and Hookups NO NO NO!!!!

When your black and you own your business at some point you’re going to have to deal with the “Can I get hookup and or discount” customer or client.  For those who don’t know what that is or have experienced that yet. Its a client or customer that thinks they are entitled to a discounted rate of service or price due to a personal relationship. Below are some of the most common reason why they feel that way.

  • Family
  • Co-Workers
  • Friends or Friend of the family
  • Classmates
  • Attend the same church
  • Same Race (Black)

The list can go on and on but i will stop here for right now. I will explain how to deal with each one over the next 30 days. Today we are dealing with how to handle family.

First one is family, when dealing with family and business i always tell people you have to be firm and direct. Maintaining your level of professionalism is very important when dealing with family. Treat them like they aren’t family (which can be a great thing).  When you’re around family you will find your self more comfortable and relax which can be a problem when discussing business matters. Below are two tips with dealing with family.

  • Be firm and direct about your prices and services. Don’t ever fill intimidated or let someone make you fell bad because you won’t provide a discount.
  • Explain to them, even though you’re family you are trying to run and maintain a successful business.  Its nothing personal just business.  If they pull the “other races don’t charge family full price.”  Your response should be, “other races family members don’t have a problem with paying full price to support family member and their dreams.”

For me being a Wedding/Event photographer contracts are essentials for my business to thrive. Contracts protect you and your clients from potential confrontation and legal matters. Also, it clears up any gray area they may come up down the road involving packages, length of service, turnaround times and so forth.

I only use contracts for event photography. I don’t use it for portraits and mini sessions and other services I provide. Time is your most precious and valuable gift. With that being say you must ensure you will receive compensation for your time.

It’s been times I have been burnt by family, friends or ex coworkers. Where I reserved a date and time and didn’t do a contract. was more of a variable agreement with the intent to do a contract. Once it got closer to the event date they had a change or something came up it was always a excuse.
I had to learn the hard way. I turned down so many events giving people the benefit of the doubt. When running a business you can’t do that you will end up out of business. From here on out no contract no deposit, no photographer.
